The Science
Of Being You.

Anil Seth has spent over two decades investigating one of science's deepest questions: what is consciousness, and why does it feel like something to be you? As Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex and co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science, he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and pioneered the theory of the 'controlled hallucination' — the idea that conscious experience is the brain's best guess about the causes of its sensory signals.

His landmark TED Talk, 'Your Brain Hallucinates Your Conscious Reality,' has surpassed 15 million views and introduced a generation to the predictive, generative nature of perception. His bestselling book Being You: A New Science of Consciousness was named Best Book of 2021 by Bloomberg and The Economist. Anil believes that understanding consciousness is not just a scientific project — it is the key to understanding what it means to be human.

/ Work With Anil

Every Format.
One Room Changed.

Keynote

A 45–90 minute talk designed to reframe how your audience thinks about consciousness, perception, and the nature of reality. Built for conferences, summits, and large-scale events.

45–90 min

Executive Workshop

A half-day or full-day deep dive for leadership teams and researchers. Participants leave with frameworks for thinking more clearly about mind, AI, and decision-making.

Half or full day

University Lecture

A rigorous academic lecture for students and researchers. Anil brings the Sackler Centre's cutting-edge work on consciousness directly into lecture halls and research seminars.

60–90 min

What People
Are Saying.

Keynote

“Anil doesn't just explain consciousness, he makes you feel what it means to be conscious. We programme hundreds of scientists and thinkers each year, and very few generate the kind of audience response he does. People were stopping each other in the corridors hours after his talk, still processing what they'd heard. We'd book him again without hesitation.”

Dr. Patricia Chen

Director of Programming, World Science Festival

“Our attendees skew tech and cynical. Anil had every single one of them leaning forward. Best booking we've made in five years.”

Maya Torres

Head of Content, SXSW Interactive

“We've hosted hundreds of scientists at the Ri. Anil generated the longest post-talk Q&A in recent memory, over forty-five minutes, and the audience still wasn't done. What sets him apart is the combination of genuine intellectual rigour and an almost theatrical ability to make the science land emotionally.”

Leila Nkosi

Head of Speaker Programmes, Royal Institution

Executive Workshop

“I'll be honest, I was sceptical. 'Neuroscience for business' sounds like exactly the kind of workshop that generates a lot of post-it notes and very little change. Anil proved me completely wrong. By the end of the morning he'd given our executive team a framework for thinking about perception, uncertainty, and decision-making that we genuinely hadn't encountered before. It wasn't self-help dressed up in science. It was the real thing, made accessible. We've since brought him back twice.”

James Roper

Managing Director, BlackRock Asset Management

“The half-day with Anil shifted something fundamental in how our team frames decisions. We went in expecting a lecture. We came out with a new vocabulary for uncertainty, one we're still using three months later.”

Dr. Sarah Okonkwo

Chief People Officer, Palantir Technologies

“Our researchers have attended hundreds of workshops. Anil's was the first where people left debating their own assumptions rather than everyone else's. That's rare.”

Prof. David Kamau

Director of Research, Francis Crick Institute

University Lecture

“My students had read the papers, but hearing Anil speak was something else entirely. Three of them changed their dissertation topics the following week.”

Prof. Emma Hartley

Chair of Psychology, University of Cambridge

“I invited Anil to give our annual Inaugural Lecture, which has to work simultaneously for undergraduates, postgraduates, faculty, and the general public. It's a notoriously difficult brief. He handled it with what I can only describe as effortless precision. The questions from first-years were just as sharp as the ones from our senior faculty.”

Prof. Yemi Adeyinka

Dean of Science, University College London

“Anil brought cutting-edge neuroscience to a room of mixed academics and public. What impressed me most was how he navigated that divide, rigorous enough for the researchers, vivid and human enough for everyone else. The cross-discipline conversations it sparked lasted for months, and we've cited that lecture as the reason three new collaborative research threads started at our institute.”

Dr. James Whitfield

Chair, Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness

The Controlled Hallucination: Why Everything You See Is Made Up

Your brain never directly experiences the world. It builds a model — and calls it reality. Understanding this changes everything about how we think about perception, truth, and the self.

You Are Not the Hero of Your Own Story — Your Brain Is

The sense of being a unified 'you' is one of the most convincing things your brain produces. It is also one of the most constructed. Here's what predictive processing reveals about identity.

Why AI Will Never Be Conscious (And Why That Matters)

The conflation of intelligence with experience is one of the most consequential errors in modern thinking. Neuroscience has something important to say about where the line actually is.
